U.S. passive assets 28% of GDP

When compared to U.S. GDP, assets invested in passive mutual funds and exchange-traded funds were about 28% of the U.S. gross domestic product at the end of 2016. While the World Bank only updates its global production figures annually, that number should be expected to grow as U.S. passive assets grew 22% year-to-date through September. That growth was primarily driven by a 20% market gain of the S&P 500 index, to which the bulk of passive assets are tethered.
