Kenneth A. Kent, a consulting actuary with Cheiron in McLean, Va., will be recognized by his peers at the American Academy of Actuaries, when he receives the Jarvis Farley Service Award at its annual meeting in Washington in November.
The Jarvis Farley Service Award honors actuaries whose volunteer efforts on behalf of the academy have made significant contributions to the advancement of the profession. The award was established in 1991 to honor Mr. Farley, a charter member of the academy and active committee member from 1972 until his death in 1991. The academy said that "his untiring volunteer work for the academy epitomized the caliber of service honored by the award." Award recipients are nominated by academy members and committees.
Mr. Kent has served as vice president of professionalism, vice president of pension, chairman of the joint committee on the code of professional conduct, the para-actuary task force and the public plans subcommittee.
Also, Larry Bruning will be presented with the academy's Robert J. Myers Public Service Award, named after the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration from 1947 to 1970.
While serving at the Kansas Insurance Department and as chairman of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' Life Actuarial Task Force, Mr. Bruning helped overhaul the state-based system for calculating life insurance reserves.
