Joseph Smolen was named senior vice president for Empower Retirement's core market segment, confirmed spokesman Stephen Gawlik in an email.
The core market segment represents defined contribution plans of up to $50 million in assets.
Mr. Smolen was vice president for sales strategy at the firm.
In his new position, he replaces William Harmon, who joined Voya Financial as president of retirement corporate 401(k).
Mr. Gawlik said Empower has not yet announced who will be taking Mr. Smolen's position as vice president for sales strategy.
