Eduard van Gelderen was named senior managing director at the University of California's Office of the Chief Investment Officer, said a news release Thursday from the university's Board of Regents.
Mr. van Gelderen is CEO of APG Asset Management, the Dutch pension plan manager, and also an executive board member of APG Group NV.
Mr. van Gelderen will report to UC Chief Investment Officer Jagdeep Singh Bachher.
The appointment was approved by the UC Board of Regents on Thursday, the release said.
Mr. Bachher was not available for an interview, a university spokeswoman said.
“I look forward to joining a team within a strong knowledge-based institution focused on investing globally and contributing to the retirement income of nearly 500,000 pension and retirement stakeholders, as well as continuing to grow the endowment," Mr. van Gelderen said in a statement in the news release.
Mr. van Gelderen, in 2013, conducted academic research on money managers' use of knowledge management as part of his doctoral research at the International School of Management in Paris.
The UC Office of Investments has $107.2 billion in assets, including the UC retirement plan, endowment and short-term investment pool. Mr. van Gelderen will be responsible for managing all of the equity investments and the commodities portfolio.
University documents show Mr. van Gelderen will be paid an annual base salary of $393,000 and will be eligible to participate in a bonus plan with a maximum bonus of $471,600.
Mr. van Gelderen “emerged as the top candidate for this role,” after a worldwide search, according to university documents.
A spokesman for APG said a search for a replacement was underway. Mr. van Gelderen will leave Aug. 1, and he and the board of APG Asset Management "will safeguard a careful and thorough transition" until an appointment is made, the spokesman said in an email.
