French stocks gain as election pares candidates

French equities responded mostly positively to Sunday's election results that whittled the field down to far-right Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron.

Among the 40 largest French companies, only one posted a negative return Monday. Financial firms Credit Agricole, Societe General and BNP Paribas were the top performers on the day. Cement company Lafargeholcim was the sole loser on the day as news that its CEO resigned amid scandal offset the market's rising tide.
