Canadian pension fund discount rates dip in 2016

Discount rates among Canadian corporate pensions in the S&P/TSX index with liabilities over C$1 billion declined in 2016 after a brief uptick in 2015. According to data collected by Pensions & Investments, the average discount rate was 3.8% in 2016, down from 4.2% in 2016. The Barclays Canadian 10+ Year Investment Grade Corporate Bond index was 4.1% in 2016, down from 4.3% in 2015.

The average funding ratio among those plans in 2016 was 93.5%, down from 96% at the end of 2015.
