Populism and the Threat to Globalization

We live in an era of globalization. And an era of increased income inequality. Are the two linked? And are they the driver behind the rise of populist parties in Europe, the election of President Trump, Brexit? In this paper, we outline the markers that have defined the latest era of globalization and its influence on global and national income trends. We then address the distributional consequences of globalization – both actual and perceived – and how they have influenced the rise of populist political movements. We end by considering the outlook for globalization and some investment implications.
