NISA Investment Advisors’ Pension Surplus Risk index fell to 8.8% in December, down 0.5 percentage points from November’s reading.
The volatility of the return-seeking asset component of the index declined 30 basis points to 9% over the month. The liability component of the index fell 1.1 percentage points to 9.1% during December.
The average plan funding ratio was 83.8% at the end of December, an increase of 1.3 percentage points.
The index is a forward-looking estimate of the funded status volatility of the 100 largest corporate pension plans as determined by NISA from publicly available information.
