Distribution of S&P 500 company returns

The S&P 500 has returned 13.22% through Dec. 21 on a total return basis. The median return for the companies in the index was 13.3% and 76% of the member companies were in positive territory. Prior to the Nov. 8 election, the index was up 6.7% and 64% of member company shares had a positive return.

Comparing 2016 performance to 2015, when only a handful of companies drove index performance on a market-weighted basis; 44% of member companies were trading in the black at the end of the year; the median return was -2.7%.
