Institutional investors allocated $52.6 billion to private equity funds in 2016, according to data collected by Pensions & Investments Research Center. Buyout funds comprised the bulk of the allocations, as the subset makes up the majority of the industry. Buyout allocations were up 47% from 2015 to $31.5 billion. Mezzanine debt saw increased interest, with allocations up $1.5 billion from the year before, a 151% increase.
Vista Equity Partners led its peers in 2016, taking in $4.1 billion in new assets.
