R. Matthew Freund was named co-chief investment officer, head of fixed income strategies at Calamos Investments, spokesman Jeff Kelley confirmed.
It is a new position; Mr. Freund will become the fifth co-CIO at the firm, part of a new structure that was implemented in 2015 following a management reorganization.
Mr. Freund will spearhead the firm's further expansion into fixed income, credit and alternative products, said CEO John Koudounis in a news release. Matt's appointment is a major step in the execution of our mission to offer new and compelling investment opportunities in key arenas,” Mr. Koudounis added. “Our goal is to provide dynamic, deep credit and alternative products as a key component of our firm's growth strategy going forward.”
The firm has $20.1 billion in assets under management, 18% of which is in traditional fixed-income strategies.
Mr. Freund joins Calamos from USAA Investments, where he was CIO, leading the teams responsible for the portfolio management of USAA's mutual funds and affiliated portfolios.
A spokesman from USAA was not immediately available for comment.
A spokesman for Calamos could not provide additional information by press time.
