A logo with a Viking wearing a bowler hat that was designed for an online platform for financial research has won a silver award in a design competition in New York.
Independent designer Oliver Haas was tasked with designing the first logo for Electronic Research InterChange — known as ERIC — a marketplace for money managers and investors to buy and sell research.
The logo features a Viking named Eric, wearing a bowler hat to represent the financial sector and the City of London. Eric is riding a chess piece — a knight, usually represented by a horse's head — which in the game of strategy is able to jump over certain pieces to get to its destination.
“Our logo is designed to encompass all that we are about,” said Chris Turnbull, Edinburgh-based co-founder of ERIC. “ERIC is a solution based on deep understanding of the financial services sector, battling to achieve the best outcomes for analysts, the buy side and of course the end investor,” Mr. Turnbull added.
The firm produced limited-edition resin figurines of their bowler hat-wearing, knight-riding Viking — one of which is sitting on a desk in Pensions & Investments' London bureau.
