ETF net flows

Market leader BlackRock received the highest net flows into its ETFs during September relative to its market counterparts. Net flows were $8.3 billion during September and $62.8 billion year-to-date through Sept. 2016. BlackRock’s ETF assets were $939.4 billion as of Sept. 30. The manager’s Core S&P 500 and Russell 1000 Value index funds had the most significant asset growth during the month with $1.4 billion and $1.2 billion in net flows, respectively.

Vanguard had $6.2 billion in new money come into its ETFs in September, and led the market year-to-date through the end of the third quarter with $63.3 billion. Total ETF assets under management were $576.2 billion at the end of September.

State Street’s Real Estate Select Sector SPDR fund was the top gainer in the month with $3.2 billion in net flows. The growth was more a function of SSgA spinning out the real estate assets from its financials group in response to the change in GICS classifications than of market sentiment toward the asset class.
