Four Catholic religious orders in Australia plan to sell their investments in coal, oil and gas companies.
The groups — The Marist Sisters Australia; Presentation Congregation Queensland, Strathfield; Presentation Sisters Wagga Wagga, Strathfield; and The Passionists-Holy Spirit Province Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, Fullarton — describe their divestment as embracing Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato Si,” issued last year, calling for protection of the environment, including in its words “to mitigate climate change.”
The Passionists order posted on its website an announcement of the divestment plans by the four organizations.
Representatives of the four orders could not be reached for further information about the divestment and details about their investment assets.
