Nancy K. Webman, retired editor of Pensions & Investments, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Plan Sponsor Council of America.
The award, which honors people who have made important contributions to the growth of the defined contribution industry, was presented to Ms. Webman on Monday, just prior to the PSCA's 69th Annual National Conference in Nashville, which runs May 3-4.
Ms. Webman retired as editor in 2015 after more than 33 years at P&I.
"Through her leadership at Pensions & Investments, Nancy Webman has had a profound impact on our industry," said Steve McCaffrey, chairman of PSCA's board of directors, in a statement. "She has worked tirelessly to identify and cover the significant issues affecting plan sponsors, and in doing so, shed light on the major issues impacting millions of participants around the world."
William M. Shaw, a member of the PSCA board of directors and managing director of marketing and communications at Windhaven Investment Management, Boston, praised Ms. Webman for the "unparalleled" impact she had on "pushing the importance of investment education" and for calling attention to the best work in defined contribution participant education through P&I's annual Eddy Awards.
"She was a mentor. She was a guide. She was a cheerleader," Mr. Shaw said during Monday's award presentation.
In accepting the award, Ms. Webman said she was honored, but that it really was for PSCA members and members of the retirement industry who are the ones changing and shaping the industry and that she "guided and directed (her) staff to report on it."
Ms. Webman started at P&I in 1982 as a reporter in Dallas. She became managing editor in Chicago in 1983 and executive editor in 1986. She was promoted to editor in 1997 and became editorial director in 2015.
While at P&I, Ms. Webman wrote and spoke on the development of the U.S. retirement system. She also supervised and was a judge of P&I's Eddy Awards for defined contribution plans, highlighting the best practices in participant education.
The PSCA award, presented periodically, was first presented in 2014. This year's award was sponsored by Dimensional Fund Advisors. The recipients in 2014 were Karen Barnes, managing counsel for McDonald's Corp., and David G. Booth, co-founder, co-CEO and chairman of Dimensional.
