Total 401(k) assets were $4.65 trillion at the end of 2015, according to the Investment Company Institute. Mutual funds represented $2.8 trillion, or 60.3%, of the total. Mutual funds have long been a key vehicle structure for defined contribution plans. In 2000, mutual funds represented 47.8% of 401(k) assets.
