Philip Zecher was named the first chief investment officer at Michigan State University, East Lansing, spokesman Jason Cody said in an e-mail.
Mr. Zecher will oversee all of the university's investments, including its $2.2 billion endowment. He will report to Lou Anna K. Simon, university president.
The CIO responsibilities were previously handled by the investment advisory subcommittee; Mark P. Haas, vice president for finance and treasurer; and investment consultant Cambridge Associates.
