While the number of private-sector pension funds investing in hedge funds has risen in recent years, the number of private-sector European pension funds allocating to hedge funds has fallen.
According to data in a Preqin report released Thursday, there were 189 Europe-based private-sector pension funds investing in hedge funds as of Nov. 30, down from 198 at the end of 2014 and down from 205 at the end of 2013.
Globally, however, the number of pension funds invested in hedge funds has risen to 715, up from 703 and 666 in 2014 and 2013, respectively.
The BT Pension Scheme is the largest European private-sector pension fund invested in hedge funds with $7.1 billion allocated, followed by Barclays Pension Fund ($3.8 billion) and HBOS Final Salary Pension Scheme ($3.5 billion).
