The number of private funds registered with the SEC rose 8.1% to 24,725 in the year ended Dec. 31, said the latest data from the SEC's division of investment management, risk and examinations office.
Aggregate private fund net assets totaled $6.7 trillion as of Dec. 31, up 6.7% from the previous year.
The number of venture capital funds rose 16.1% during the one-year period to 504 funds, said data from the Securities and Exchange Commission's “Private Funds Statistics” report for the fourth quarter of 2014, which was released Friday.
The universe of real estate funds increased 15.6% to 1,789 funds, followed by securitized assets funds, up 13.2% to 1,327 funds; qualifying hedge funds, up 12.6% to 1,541 funds; and private equity funds, up 10.6% to 8,407 funds.
Traditional hedge funds showed the lowest increase, at 2.6% in the year ended Dec. 31 to 8,635 funds.
The number of money managers advising private funds rose 4.8% during the year to 2,694 companies, data culled from SEC Form PF and Form ADV filings showed.
