NISA Investment Advisors' Pension Surplus Risk index in August had its largest one-month increase since September 2011.
The index rose 1.2 percentage points during the month to 10.3%. It’s the highest index level since January 2014.
Volatility for the return-seeking asset component of the index rose 200 basis points in August to 9.7%. Volatility for the liability component also increased, up 70 basis points to 5.9%.
The average funded status of plans in the universe fell to 83.8% from 86.2% at the end of July.
