The number of cash balance plans grew an estimated 15% in 2014, according to a study by cash balance plan management firm Kravitz Inc.
Since 2001, the number of plans has grown at a rate of 20.2% annually.
The study notes that between 2001 and 2013, cash balance plans grew to represent 28% of all defined benefit plans. According to Kravitz, there are 12.3 million participants in cash balance plans in the U.S., with nearly 56% of those participating in a plan with less than 10 participants.
