Preqin estimates 1,180 zombie private equity funds are in investor portfolios, with estimated unrealized assets of $126.6 billion. The number of zombie funds is up 12.5% from last July and up 18% from July 2013.
2008 vintage zombie funds have the most unrealized assets -- the 250 zombie funds hold $42.2 billion (a third of the overall total held by zombie funds).
Preqin's analysis shows that 54% of zombie funds are venture capital funds. Buyout funds were the second most common type (21%), followed by growth funds (10%).
