The Cambridge Associates U.S. Private Equity index returned 11.25% net of fees, expenses and carried interest in 2014, according to data released Wednesday. The index returned 0.83% in the fourth quarter.
For the year, the private equity index trailed the blue-chip S&P 500 index by 244 basis points, but outpaced the small-cap Russell 2000 index by 636 basis points.
U.S. private equity performance has largely mirrored that of public equities over the five-year period. But over longer time frames, the private equity index exhibits significantly higher returns on an annualized basis.
