W. Bryan Lewis was named executive director of the $18.9 billion Illinois State Universities Retirement System, Champaign, effective April 6, SURS announced Friday in a news release.
William E. Mabe, executive director since June 2010, plans to retire March 31.
Mr. Lewis is chief operating officer and investment director of the investment management division of the North Carolina Department of State Treasurer. His duties in North Carolina include management, investment and operational strategy, legislative policy, and regulatory compliance of Raleigh-based North Carolina Retirement Systems' defined benefits plans, whose combined assets total $88.8 billion. Mr. Lewis has been with the treasurer's office since 2009.
“We expect to initiate efforts in the near future to replace Mr. Lewis,” said Schorr Johnson, communications manager, North Carolina treasurer's office, in an e-mail. “Details for that process have not yet been determined.”
SURS hired The Hollins Group in November to assist in a national search. It oversees $17.3 billion in defined benefit assets and $1.6 billion in 401(a) defined contribution assets.
