The executive committee of the Illinois State Universities Retirement System board of trustees hired The Hollins Group to assist in a national search for candidates for executive director.
The hiring is pending contract negotiations.
William E. Mabe announced Sept. 22 he plans to retire effective March 31 as executive director of the Champaign-based SURS, which oversees $16.9 billion in defined benefit assets and $1.5 billion in 401(a) defined contribution assets.
“Upon completion of a contract, SURS will work with THG to determine the position specifications, advertising and timeline development,” Mr. Mabe said in a statement. “The board expects to have final candidates for the position within 120 days after entering into a contract with the firm.”
Derrick Buckingham, senior vice president and managing director at Hollins, will be the lead consultant to SURS, Mr. Mabe said.
An RFP was issued in October for an executive recruiting firm.
