The average 401(k) balance as of Sept. 30 was $89,100. That figure -- based on the 21,300 corporate defined contribution plans for which Fidelity is record keeper -- was down 2% from June 30 but up 5.7% from Sept. 30, 2013.
During the third quarter, the Russell 3000 index was flat, the MSCI ACWI ex-U.S. IMI was down 5.3% and the Barclays U.S. Aggregate index returned 0.2%.
In the year ended Sept. 30, the Russell 3000 gained 17.7%, the MSCI ACWI ex-U.S. IMI was up 5.4% and the Barclays U.S. Aggregate index was up 4%.
Average employee contributions over the last 12 months were up 1.2%, to $6,080.
