John C. Lane was named vice president and chief investment officer at Ohio State University, Columbus, said Chris Davey, university spokesman.
He begins Oct. 29. Mr. Lane is currently chief investment officer at Ohio Public Employees’ Retirement System, Columbus, where he oversees the investments of the retirement system’s $87 billion in assets, which include $75.8 billion in defined benefit assets.
Richard Shafer, deputy director in PERS’ investment division, will take on the role of interim CIO, and the retirement system will begin a nationwide search for a permanent replacement, said Michael Pramik, spokesman.
At Ohio State, Mr. Lane will oversee $3.4 billion of long-term investments, including $2.3 billion of endowment assets. He replaces Jonathan Hook, who left the university in May to become the first CIO at the $2 billion The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc., Owings Mills, Md.
Michael Papadakis, Ohio State University’s vice president of financial services and treasurer, currently has the role of interim CIO and he will resume his previous duties upon Mr. Lane’s arrival.
