Fred Alger Management Inc. has a different way to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
On Sept. 16, the New York-based money manager hosted a screening of three short films it commissioned. The films weren't about Alger's achievements, or really about Alger at all.
At the screening Dan Chung, Alger's CEO and chief investment officer, explained to the audience that the company didn't want to simply relate what the firm has done in the past 50 years. Instead, he wanted to find a way to speculate on what the world would look like in the year 2064.
“We thought it would be fitting to mark our anniversary not by looking back, but by looking forward at the next 50 years,” Mr. Chung said.
In each of the three films, which make up Alger's “Conversations with Tomorrow” film series, an expert in medicine, energy and technology — physician and scientist Daniel Kraft, Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Donald Sadoway and research scientist Jennifer Healey, respectively — discuss possible future innovations in their fields.
“The films are very forward-looking, and Alger is also very forward-looking,” said Jeanne Sdroulas, senior vice president, head of marketing at Alger, in a phone interview. “So there's a nice parallel.”
The films, as well as additional complementary material, are available on the website thinkfurtheralger.com.
