Charles P. “Chuck” Valdes, a former board member with the $298 billion California Public Employees' Retirement System, Sacramento, has died, said Angela Parreno, a clerk at the Sacramento County Coroner's office.
Mr. Valdes, 74, died Sept. 2. Ms. Parreno had no further information.
Mr. Valdes had been implicated in the CalPERS pay-to-play corruption scandal. Sources said federal prosecutors had been considering seeking indictments against Mr. Valdes, and another former CalPERS board member, Kurato Shimada, in the scandal.
Former CalPERS CEO Federico R. Buenrostro pleaded guilty to accepting $200,000 in cash bribes from another former CalPERS board member, Alfred Villalobos. Mr. Villalobos' corruption trial begins Feb. 23.
Further information regarding Mr. Valdes' cause of death was not available by press time.
CalPERS officials were not immediately available for comment.
