Regulatory assets under management by private equity, hedge fund and other private fund managers required to register with the SEC increased 22% to $8.9 trillion in the year ended May 31.
The Securities and Exchange Commission issued its annual report to Congress last week regarding its staff's use of private fund data provided by registrants.
The SEC's report showed that hedge fund assets totaled $5 trillion as of May 31, compared to $4.1 trillion the prior year; private equity fund assets totaled $1.9 trillion vs. $1.6 trillion; other private fund assets, $975 billion vs. $698 billion; securitized fund assets, $386 billion vs. $338 billion; real estate funds, $354 billion vs. $299 billion; liquidity funds, $257 billion vs. $258 billion; and venture capital funds, $30 billion, vs. $23 billion.
Private fund management companies that filed information with the SEC rose to a total of 2,661 as of May 31, up from 2,305 firms a year earlier.
