Stephanie Avakian was named deputy director of the SEC’s enforcement division Thursday.
Ms. Avakian is a partner in the New York office of law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. She will join the Securities and Exchange Commission in late June. The position had been vacant.
Ms. Avakian previously served as branch chief in the enforcement division’s New York office and as a counsel to SEC Commissioner Paul Carey, according to an agency statement.
Andrew Ceresney, enforcement director, said in the statement that Ms. Avakian “is widely respected because of her intelligence, her pragmatic approach, and her excellent judgment.”
