Fidelity Investments on Tuesday announced its average 401(k) balance was $88,600 at the end of the first quarter, up 9.5% from $80,900 at the end of December.
Over the five-year period ended March 31, the average 401(k) balance tracked by Fidelity rose 92%, from $46,200 in 2009. During that period, the Russell 3000 index rose 169.2%, while the Barclays U.S. Aggregate index posted a cumulative return of 26.4%.
Fidelity noted that for pre-retirees (age 55 and older), the average first-quarter balance stood at $165,000.
