Real estate investment trusts and commodities produced the highest returns across broad asset classes in the first quarter of 2014. The FTSE NAREIT All REITs index returned 8.6% and the Dow Jones-UBS Commodity index was up 7% for the quarter.
Large caps fared the best among equity types as the Russell 1000 rose 2.1% vs. the Russell 2000's 1.1% return. The MSCI ACWI IMI ex-U.S. returned just less than 1%.
