Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez named five new members of the Department of Labor ERISA Advisory Council.
Mr. Perez on Wednesday also named current member Neal Schelberg to serve as chairman and current member Paul Secunda as vice chairman for the 2014 council.
Mr. Schelberg, a senior partner at the law firm Proskauer Rose, has worked with more than 50 single- and multiemployer pension and welfare benefit plans. Mr. Secunda is a professor at Marquette University Law School and previously has practiced labor law.
New appointees include Kevin Hanney, who is director of pension investments for United Technologies Corp., overseeing $20 billion in defined contribution plan assets. Mr. Hanney will represent employers on the council.
Christine S. Hwang, a partner at law firm Leonard Carder, will represent employee organizations; Dennis Mahoney, director of the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist Program co-sponsored by The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, will represent the general public; Mark E. Schmidtke from law firm Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, will represent insurers; and Deborah L. Smith a partner in the audit practice of Grant Thornton, will represent the accounting profession.
