Jagdeep Singh Bachher was named chief investment officer for the University of California, Oakland, effective April 1, according to a university news release.
Mr. Bachher will also hold the title of vice president investments, office of the president.
Mr. Bachher will be in charge of managing the university's pension, endowment and short and total return investment pools.
The University of California has been without a CIO since the retirement of Marie Berggren last July.
Mr. Bachher is currently executive vice president, venture and innovation, at the C$70 billion (US$63 billion) Alberta Investment Management Corp., Edmonton.
Officials at AIMCo could not be immediately reached for comment as to whether they have launched a search to fill Mr. Bachher's position.
