P&I Online readers are bullish on the prospects for the Standard & Poor's 500 index in 2014, but they don't expect a repeat of 2013. About 87% of respondents to a P&I Online poll last week believe the S&P 500 will end the year with a gain.
Of the respondents, 11.7% believe the index will close up more than 15%; 58.8% believe the S&P 500 index will close up 5% to 15%; and 16.4% believe the index will have modest gain of less than 5%.
Among the bearish respondents, 9.1% believe the market will drop more than 5%, and 4% of respondents believe the market is in for a modest 5% or less drop.
Last year, the S&P 500 posted a total return of 29.6%.
The response of P&I Online readers is in line with a panel of experts that Pensions & Investments interviewed in the Jan. 6 issue.
