Newmont Mining was by far the worst performer in the S&P 500 during 2013. The firm’s -48.4% return was driven by the worst drop in the spot price of gold since 1981. Cliffs Natural Resources - another mining company - was the second-worst performer during the year (-30.4%), followed by Edwards Lifesciences (-27.1%), Teradata (-26.5%) and Peabody Energy (-25.3%).
