CalPERS Chief Investment Officer Joseph Dear and CalSTRS Corporate Governance Chief Anne Sheehan are two powerful people in their roles at the two largest pension funds in the U.S.
Now the two could be called a power couple, but neither Mr. Dear nor Ms. Sheehan is flaunting their new role as husband and wife. In fact, many in the Sacramento-based $265.5 billion California Public Employees' Retirement System and West-Sacramento-based $163.7 billion California State Teachers' Retirement System organizations don't even know the couple recently tied the knot.
Mr. Dear confirmed to Pensions & Investments that he was married to Ms. Sheehan around Christmastime 2012 but declined to comment beyond that. Ms. Sheehan, through CalSTRS spokesman Ricardo Duran, declined to comment.
Sources say Mr. Dear and Ms. Sheehan each had been married previously.
It's unclear where they meet, but Mr. Dear and Ms. Sheehan both have been part of the top leadership at the Council of Institutional Investors. In fact, Ms. Sheehan replaced Mr. Dear as chair of the council in April 2012.
