Fidelity Investments says the average 401(k) among its 20,600 record-kept plans rose 4.7% during the quarter to $80,900 at the end of March. Participants age 55 and over saw their average balance rise by $7,000 during the first quarter to $150,300. Generation Xers - those born between 1965 and 1978 - saw the highest percentage gain during the quarter with a 7.6% increase, while the average Generation Y balance increased only 7.1%.
