U.S. stocks posted another strong start this year through March. The Russell 3000's first-quarter return of 11.1% is the sixth-best return since the index began more than 34 years ago. Last year, the index rose 12.8% in the first quarter. Since its inception in December 1978, the average first-quarter return of the Russell 3000 has been 2.92%, with a median return of 3.53%.
