Hedge fund closings up nearly 13%; new launches relatively flat from a year ago

1,108 new hedge funds were launched in 2012, down slightly from 1,113 in 2011, while the number of funds liquidating rose 12.6% in 2012 to 873. According to the latest HFR Market Microstructure Industry Report, the majority of liquidations was concentrated in equity hedge, while launches were distributed across macro, relative value and equity hedge strategies.
