The White House is expected to name civil rights attorney Thomas E. Perez as secretary of the Department of Labor this week.
White House and DOL officials declined to comment, but sources familiar with the process said the nomination is imminent. Mr. Perez did not return a phone call by press time.
In January, Hilda Solis resigned from the position, which is being filled on an interim basis by Deputy Labor Secretary Seth Harris.
Mr. Perez, an assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights, was secretary of labor for Maryland from 2007 to 2009 and is well regarded by labor organizations and former colleagues.
