Robert Khuzami will step down as enforcement director at the Securities and Exchange Commission at the end of January, the SEC announced Wednesday.
Spokesman John Nester declined to comment on a replacement.
One possible candidate is George Canellos, deputy director of enforcement since June, and former director of the SEC's New York regional office, according to a source.
During Mr. Khuzami's four-year tenure, the enforcement division filed a record number of cases in fiscal years 2011 and 2012, including against Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Credit Suisse, Citigroup and State Street, according to SEC data.
Mr. Khuzami also restructured the division into specialized units, including one for asset management.
SEC Chairwoman Elisse Walter said in a news release that his leadership “transformed and reinvigorated the enforcement program.”
