This report, the Largest Money Managers Worldwide Assets, starts with a ranking of the managers based on worldwide institutional assets under management. It also includes rankings of managers of exchanged-traded funds, mutual fund assets, absolute-return strategies and hedge funds, as well as managers ranked by assets run for central banks, sovereign wealth funds and non-affiliated insurance companies.
All money management firms are allowed to provide information for the survey; the only qualification for inclusion in the database is that the firm must manage assets for U.S. tax-exempt institutions such as qualified pension plans, endowments or foundations. A listing of the largest managers worldwide, without that underlying qualification, will be published Oct. 29 in the P&I/Towers Watson World 500.
Pensions & Investments contacted more than 1,000 banks, trust companies, insurance companies and independent investment management firms in North America and abroad. The information contained in the stories charts and tables came from answers to a detailed, online questionnaire and follow-up e-mails and phone calls. All information, except where noted, is as of Dec. 31.
