North Carolina Treasurer Janet Cowell, sole trustee of the $71.8 billion North Carolina Retirement Systems, Raleigh, easily won her election primary Tuesday with 77% of the votes.
Ms. Cowell defeated Ron Elmer for the Democratic nomination and will face Republican candidate Steve Royal in the general election.
In Indiana, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who oversees the $388 million Indiana State Police Pension Trust, Indianapolis, defeated six-term Sen. Richard Lugar on Tuesday to win the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.
Mr. Mourdock, who is in the middle of his second term as treasurer, will face three-term U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly, a Democrat who is losing his seat because his South Bend district was remapped. If Mr. Mourdock wins the Senate race, the governor will have to name a replacement for treasurer.
