President Obama faces highest unemployment rate in history six months prior to an election

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday that U.S. employment rose by 115,000 in April, leaving the unemployment rate little changed from March at 8.1%. As President Obama formally begins his re-election campaign Saturday, he faces the daunting task of overcoming the highest unemployment rate six months before a presidential election. President Reagan faced a similar situation during his re-election campaign, when unemployment stood at 7.7% in April 1984.
