Total 529 college savings plan assets reached $144.4 billion for the quarter ended Dec. 31, up 4.4% from the fourth quarter of 2010, according to an analysis by Financial Research Corp. based on the firm's collecting data from program managers and state agencies.
FRC researchers said in the report issued Monday they detected a “positive overall momentum” for the 529 savings plan industry between 2009 and 2011.
The record for 529 plan assets was set in the second quarter of 2011, when total assets hit $149.8 billion, Paul Curley, FRC's director of college savings research, said in an e-mailed response to questions.
