In Pensions & Investments' latest plan sponsor survey, corporate and public plan sponsors reported that emerging markets equities represented a little less than 7% of their equity allocations. Yet emerging markets equity had a 12.56% weighting — as of Sept. 30, 2011 — in the MSCI All Country World Investible Market index. Only three plan sponsors reported holdings of more than 20% of total equity investments in emerging markets: Missouri State Employees' Retirement System, Dow Chemical Co. and the South Carolina Retirement Systems. Surprisingly, around half of the plans reported that EM equities comprised less than 5% of their equity allocations.
