Mindy Harris was attending a session at the annual conference of the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators in Savannah, Ga., when “the speaker told (us) there was an attack on New York.”
Ms. Harris, chief financial officer of Multnomah County, Ore., and a former NAGDCA president, said conference attendees watched television descriptions of the events in the conference center or in their rooms. Ms. Harris and others went to a local Red Cross office in Savannah to give blood.
“All the planes were grounded,”said Ms. Harris, whose flight home was delayed three days.
Those who stayed experienced “the most incredible performance,” she said. NAGDCA had scheduled the 82nd Airborne Division's All-America Chorus from Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., to perform. Although she said some NAGDCA members debated canceling the performance, the choral group performed on schedule in full military dress.
“Everyone was crying,” she said.
