Donald Fuerst was named senior pension fellow at the American Academy of Actuaries, effective Sept. 6, confirmed Andrew Simonelli, assistant director of communications for public affairs.
He replaces Frank Todisco, who stepped down in November 2010 to become the chief actuary at the Government Accountability Office.
Mr. Fuerst will serve as the academy’s chief public policy liaison on pensions, Social Security and other retirement issues.
“He’s really passionate about these issues, having been involved for almost three decades working on different proposals with retirement programs and retirement security issues,” Mr. Simonelli said in a telephone interview.
Mr. Fuerst was a senior partner and consulting actuary at Mercer in Denver; he retired last year.
He has been an academy member since 1978 and also a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.
The American Academy of Actuaries is a 17,000-member professional association that assists public policymakers on all levels by providing expertise and actuarial advice.
